Sussex v Warwickshire
#21
Just thinking about our late friend Kim who (along with Stingray) was Trotty's biggest admirer; and he also had a great fondness for Bears v Sussex matches.  He would have been thrilled at Trotty's performance.

I was thinking exactly the same this morning Terry. I do miss Kim.

"Anyone know his average against Sussex over the years? I swear he always hits a century against them."

I looked at Bears v Sussex games in the Championship going back to 2002 and was able to create the following:

IJL Trott
M      In   NO     Runs     HS      Ave      100    50     Ct  St
First-class*  279   465   47     18522   226    44.31     45     92    222  0
v Sussex+    20     33     2      1793    210    57.84      7      12

* Does not include current match v Sussex
+ Does include current match v Sussex

Scores v Sussex:

124, 4, 15, 68, 35, 16, 1, 106, 26, 37, 96, 178, 56, 9*, 166, 6, 35, 84, 19, 9, 109, 16, 210 (2005, Edg) 7, 29, 0, 90, 40*, 26, 31, 6, 5, 134 (As an opener! Edg, May 2003)

Has anyone else got a touch of ‘the fear’ how this might pan out? Kent are going to win fairly soon with a full 24 point haul, we’re 12 clear and will get 12 from this if it ends in a draw (subject to Tayls’ maths working out). I have nasty feeling it ends with Kent coming to Edgbaston, bowling first under leaden skies and us getting run through by Darren Stevens. We end up second by virtue of fewer bonus points. Would be a sickener considering we’ve been top virtually all season.

Coming 2nd would still mean our objectives have been achieved - but going up as champs would be better

We would not finish 2nd with fewer bonus points as we have so many that Kent can't match our bonus points. If we finish level on points, Kent would win the title on most wins (Which is fair) which is what happened in the 1971 CC race. Doubt we would 'Dangle the carrot ' tomorrow but Sussex need to win so Jeetan could say "Give us 10 overs of help-yourself bowling and you can chase 370 in 85 overs. If we draw we will be level on points with Kent - We will just have to beat them at Edgbaston without worrying about the toss as sometimes late season wickets can deteriorate quickly.

Another excellent opening partnership - they really are getting it together. Push on for a win in the afternoon.

I don't think so...their opening batsman has started bowling now?

Are we not going to try and win this game? I would be extremely disappointed were that the case.

Whilst I agree we should have declared and had a go @them,why not reflect on the positive? Promotion has been achieved @the first time of asking - something Middlesex have failed to do! Party time next week and then onwards and upwards to2019with both men and women in division 1

Agreed on the positive, of course it is brilliant news to get promotion at the first attempt, but surely even you can't look past the lack of ambition to win the match entirely. Winning the league would make that promotion party even better and we had a great chance to get the points on the board here.

I agree we should have tried to win this, but I can see the logic behind not trying to. Presumably we decided that the pitch was something of a road and we were unlikely to bowl them out in the second innings. With this in mind we probably thought it was best to rest our bowlers for next week's match against Kent and give our batsmen more time in the middle. And I guess we're probably backing ourselves to get more bonus points than Kent next week, after all, they've only got 16 batting points all season.

To not lose the game and win promotion was what it was all about.... Anything else is a bonus. So to bat all day was imho the correct thing to do. Our bowlers will be fit and ready. It's a statement of intent that Kent really don't concern us and totally p1$$ed Sussex off. Well done to the guys in getting out of the backwater and dross that is Division two.

I don't see much logic in not trying to win a game, winning is a bloody good habit to have. The pitch wasn't a road when we lost 6 for 19 or when they were 14 for 3, plus Kent may not have many batting points but have won 10 from 13........good habit.
Can't criticise what we have achieved but would have been nice to get into next week with a positive attitude. That all said well done Bears!

So pleased for the Bears and that the partnership of Sibley and Rhodes has come good. The icing on the cake will be a ton for Trotty next week or at the very least to pass 1000 runs. Looking good for the men and women!

Great to be promoted and I don't think it was ever in doubt once I saw up close, some of the other sides in Div 2. Obvious after an hour we were never going to seriously try and win. Thought we might have tried to have a go with half a day left, glad I wasn't one of a few supporters who made the journey down today. Kent have played in low scoring games on some sporty or could we say, dodgy pitches. I can imagine the comments had we have played on some of the pitches that they did. Every time we see low scoring games at Edgbaston we get snidey remarks from people who have never ventured a visit to our home. Could be interesting next week. Shame if we couldn't win after being at the top for so much of this season. Congratulations either way and thoroughly deserved.

Firstly, congratulations to all at the club- we are back in Division 1; good achievement and it was what we targeted back in April. I will admit to being wrong, I thought it would be a tougher season for us but as others have said, some of the opposition has been a little limited (to put it politely)

Regarding today, I would like to have seen a push for a win, but they did what was required for promotion. Sussex bat most of the way down, so any chase would have been interesting. It also results in setting up a fascinating last match v Kent- I personally can't wait for next week (Going every day apart from Monday)

Well done to the team. Now lets go and win it. I would hope as many members as possible come to the game next week to support the team. With our membership of over 4000 surely there should be at least a 1000 per day, plus what ever Kent bring along, so should be heaithy attendences next week. COYB
