Ryan Sidebottom

Excellent news that Australian-born trialist opening bowler Ryan Sidebottom has signed on a contract until the end of the season after recent impressive performances for the 2ndXI. A welcome addition to an attack that has struggled to bowl teams out twice in recent seasons, even more welcome with Rikki Clarke's departure leaving us one opening bowler short.

He is 27 years old and seems to be in the best form of his career, having taken 45 wickets in 16 matches for Carlton in First Grade cricket over the winter and has been playing for Berkswell in the Birmingham League. He out bowled Wright, Woakes and Stone in the Championship win over Northants last week with 8-33 in the second innings and 10-59 in the match. This followed his 5-54 in the first innings of Championship match and 5-11 in a t20 game at Durham the previous week.

That's great news.  Even at 27 (Edit - 28 next week) he's still got time for a long career in County cricket.  I hope he gets a First Team chance before the end of the season - he deserves it, after recent performances for the Seconds.

Good interview here by Brian Halford with Ryan:

I didn't know he was one of five brothers, including one called Steele.
Steele Sidebottom - sounds like a medieval chastity device.
