Essex at Chelmsford
#1
Continuing our grand tour of away games, we go to Chelmsford this weekend. A small ground close to the city centre, I watched our batting coach score a double century there - much of it off the bowling of Chris Wright. They do decent chips.

I've seen Essex a couple of times this year and they are a good side. Their position in the table is not a fluke. They have four batsmen averaging 49 or more including the magnificently classy Alastair Cook who looks like he's enjoying himself in a lower pressure environment. After their promotion, they dipped into the overseas pool to strengthen the bowling going for Neil Wagner - who is fast and hostile, not the best bowler to have in the opposition when your batting confidence is low - and Simon Harmer - that rare beast, a capable South African spin bowler. The good news is that leading wicket taker Jamie Porter and batsman Dan Lawrence will be away with the England Lions. Varun Chopra may therefore get a game and might feel he has something to prove.

If Essex were at full strength I would fear we were in for another pasting. With Porter missing, their bowling may be a little light. Good luck Bears!

I expect you all have Barking Today as one of your favourite websites: but if not, here is a report with some interesting quotes, especially about the pitch:

Many have likened his conversation midway through devouring chips to barking.
