Lancashire RL Cup
#21
But for a horror show with the ball we might have won that. And the same can be said of most of our other RL cup games so far.

Oh dear...where to begin?

With the ball, with the exception of Clarke, Patel and Javid we just weren't good enough. Now I hate to say this, but Bell's captaincy has to come under scrutiny. Why was Patel left with 1 over unused when he had only gone for just over 5 an over? Putting OHD on to bowl at the end with a ridiculously short leg side boundary was asking for trouble. I know it wasn't the sole reason, but that one over that he bowled where he completely lost it (conceding 35 runs) pretty much cost us the game, and Barker bowling juicy full toss after juicy full toss didn't help. Hannon-Dalby has surely got to be dropped now - Poysden has got to be a better bet.

Many of our batsmens dismissals were down to poor shots - Hain picked out the only fielder in the deep to the long boundary (why go aerial on that side? No chance of hitting a six), Bell wafted at one and was caught behind, Lamb had a wild swipe at one and was bowled. It's just really poor.

But on the positive side:

- Good to see Clarke finally hit some form! We definitely need to offer him the two year deal that he wants, he's definitely one of our best bowlers in one day cricket and we can't really afford to lose any more players!
- It was sunny
- I saw something I never thought I would - OHD hit a six! Unbelievable scenes

Looks like we're out of the running now which is so disappointing, given that there are still 3 games left.

At least we showed some positive intent with the bat, which is encouraging. In fact, the issue seems to have swung from poor batting to poor bowling - there are grounds for optimism in amongst the gloom but we desperately need to get the winning mentality back. I've been thinking about what I would do if I was Jim Troughton, a few thoughts are:
1. Rest OHD with immediate effect. I've been one of his critics but the poor lad's confidence must be in tatters. Give him a break to get his head together, he can still do a decent job in 2020 at least.
2. Focus on the positives - there really are some.
3. Remind everyone that we've got fresh blood coming in to the 2020 arena as well as (hopefully) the return of the likes of Rankin and the introduction of Stone to look forward to.
4. Controversial, but suggest that Bell steps down as Captain. We need his runs in the middle order and I suspect he is hugely distracted by captaincy. I am not sure who should replace him but perhaps Westwood in 4 day cricket and Porterfield in white ball.
5. Focus also on attracting fresh talent for next year - we need to rebuild.

Hain, Bell, Chopra, Ambrose, Evans.

Current and recent top order batsmen in the 50 over game for Warwickshire. All have a better average than Porterfield.

Averages aren't everything, but when you consider the bloke soon might not average 30 in the championship, does he merit his salary?

On a similar train of thought, any news on Rankin? Not heard a word about him.

And therein lies the problem. Of the five you have listed, only three are still at the club. As far as I'm aware we don't really have anyone to replace Porterfield! I believe Rankin is still injured.

Does anyone know whether Josh Poysden was injured?
If not, who would want to be a young player on the Warwickshire staff.

If Josh wasn't injured then why didn't he play. OHD was expensive even against an ordinary side like Leicestershire. What would it matter if we had 3 spinners in a side, 2 were effective today so why shouldn't 3 be. We had all 3 playing last year in the quarter finals v Essex (about 8-100 combined at 4 an over) and that worked. Why on earth did Bell opt to bowl first. We did it in the first game but when something has failed big time in 3 games in a week, then do something different and if we had got even 310, we would have stood a better chance than chasing anything over 300. Bell doesn't often win the toss and when he does he should use some intelligence but anyone could tell it was a batting day. For the first time in my life I felt ashamed whilst watching us when both OHD and Keith were getting smashed everywhere and I cannot understand how a top class bowler like Braker can keep bowling full tosses. I have booked Friday off to watch us play Worcestershire but that is academic now and I will not waste time, money and energy with the way we are playing at the moment. Our bowling was supposed to be our strength but if they cannot keep the runs down then our batsmen have to keep batting big just to try and keep pace with the opposition.

Without checking back I believe a century has been scored against us in every game lost. Therein lies the problem.

Yes you are right LE and whilst watching and listening to the game, the commentators mentioned that before todays game we had conceded twenty 6's whilst scoring only 2 ourselves. Who have we got to play the sort of innings that Croft played today despite getting too much of a helping hand from us.

We are a shambles .Giles ,Troughton ,Richardson and Bell need to start earning there money before it's too late .
Why was Poysden not playing ,Why was Umeed not picked after his double century for 2nds ( he must be in form ).
Why can't Westwood play white ball cricket .
Why is Bell not bowling Thomason.
Why are we still picking OHD
Cannot see us winning another game in this comp ,other squads look far superior and better organised .
Another question that needs answering ,why are playing a one day match on a square so near the boundary when we are struggling with a very poor attack ??

Using pitch 3 of 24, leaving a 45 yard boundary on one side is the same for both teams. I think that's a criticism too far - but my username may suggest where my loyalties / biases lie!

The pitches require bonus TLC this year with an extra packed schedule. The one less championship fixture isn't being felt with so much cricket needing to be on the central pitches due to TV (I think the central 10 are wired up for stump mics / technology) so this is the additional CT fixtures (and practice sessions), D/N test, Finals Day, and all the blast fixtures to consider, many that will draw large crowds. Other counties have outgrounds and we really do zap everything possible each year from Edgbaston for first XI cricket. Pitches 3 and 4 were used for Championship fixtures mid-last season.

I can only think Poysden didn't play because they didn't want three spinners with a short boundary. Hopefully he will play in the remaining games.

It was a shambolic performance and it was hard to believe that two experienced professionals could bowl as badly as Barker and Hannon-Dalby did. Neither should play again in this competition. As we're out, give a couple of the younger lads a chance.

I've been very disappointed by Rikki this season but at least he put in a performance with bat and ball yesterday.

Ian Bell seems to struggle to build an innings now. I've thought that for a while. Despite his contract extension I have a feeling he may not be around a lot longer.

Surely Barker will be pulled out to keep him fresh for championship action now, as he was last year. Played one t20 maybe. Thornton, Thomason, Poysden, Lamb, Javid surely all straight in. Would you rest Patel also or are you leaving yourself too thin on the ground then? Hopefully, life without Jeets is another 3 years away while he's still the best around.

Sunny Singh has got to be worth a go at some point? As far as I see it, we're relying on him to take over from Jeets at some point in the not too distant future.

Completely agree with your points RP - with the possible exception of Umeed coming in (he did well in the Seconds Championship game, but hasn't got a great record in LO games) and bowling Thomason more (I just don't think he is up to being a specialist Bowler in First Team cricket at the moment - any First Team cricket - though he might be alright as a middle order batsman who bowls a few overs).

I don't know why Westwood is not getting picked now in LO games.  He has a decent record for the County over the years - no worse than anyone else - and he's still relatively young and fit.

OHD should go straightaway - bring in Adair (if fit), Panayi (my choice if Adair isn't ready), Spencer or even Henry Brookes.  Obviously bring in Chris Wright and/or Boyd Rankin, as soon as they're fit (when is that ?).  And Poysden should play every match - 3 spinners could easily work - especially if Ateeq also contributes as bastman (and moves up the order a bit).
