Cook

First rate batsman but not a great captain? Ok but not great. Notably, when things were going wrong as in India or Australia he had nothing to offer that would arrest the slide. I'm not sorry to see him give up the captaincy.

Any candidates other than Root? Do there need to be?

Agree with your views on Cook. Fair play to him doing it over the course of 5 years however - a weaker man would have chucked the towel in before now. The time is right.

They will go with Root, and I think they should. To play devil's advocate though... Broad at the age of 30/31, and looking increasingly likely he'll be playing test only with his non-inclusion in the WI touring party. Root could remain as vice and be the next man in line in 3-4 years time. Root is in an increasingly exclusive group that plays all three formats.

Although there are exceptions, the best Test captains are at least 30 when they take on the job.  Root is 26 and the job will probably have worn him down by the time he reaches 30.  Do we know any 30 plus players with a lot of Test experience and with some success in captaincy at county level (maybe won a trophy last year)?

This gives the selectors the opportunity to have a single captain for all forms of the game. No I'm not suggesting Morgan as test captain!
While Robert may be bad, Robert is not all Mugabe's.
There are GOOD Mugabe's
It is Warwickshire County Cricket Club!

Well according to King Cricket, Morgan might just captain Ireland:

I think, though, that King Cricket has met Mugabe and is trying to wind him up.

Really hope that Roots form does not take a tumble because of the burdens of such a high profile job. Trouble is , there are really no other candidates. The captain is usually a batsman and if you consider that England's batting line-up is not yet settled, it leaves even fewer options if Cook decided to call it quits after another 2 years and then Root got injured.
