Very good to see Chris has not been forgotten by the England selectors, also good to see Varun & Moeen in the squad.

Hopefully all three will be given a chance to show what they can do at test level.
While Robert may be bad, Robert is not all Mugabe's.

Fair enough, that's reassuring. Giving Chris the captaincy acknowledges his seniority and is a proper honour. It's also a shot in the dark given that Varun captains his county but it could be inspired.

That's a handy squad too. Moeen's spin may be needed to support Kerrigan and Borthwick. Bairstow's inclusion is interesting - will he keep wicket or is Foakes there to do that?

In his debut in the Australian BBL today, Chris scored 8 not out off 9 batts batting at #5 and had figures of 1-31 off his 4 overs, he was the fifth bowler used.

His side lost the game, despite having a good start.

Sydney Thunder have now lost 14 games in a row so they aren't exactly the top team.
Other observations from watching the re-run on Sky:
Games are being shown free-to-air in Australia
Steve Smith and David Warner were both freed up to play less than a week before the Test Match
Not sure about having a batsman on the mike but it didn't seem to bother Warner
The umpire cam gives a different dimension
The SCG looks magnificent. The new grandstand will increase capacity to 48,000
David Warner's girlfriend also looks magnificent!

I watched some of that Terry and was surprised to see Smith and Warner in action.Maybe that is the sort of relaxed approach that we could use in home series to take some pressure off the Test squad.

ALWAYS A BEAR

Very good news for Chris, he's been called up into the England ODI side & joins the squad in Melbourne this week.
This probably means he'll not be leading the Lions side in Sri Lanka.
(sorry only seen the story in a tweet so far)

AAAAAAHHHHH!! When will the England set up stop trying to ruin our players? Leading the Lions would have been great development experience for Chris. Getting smacked about by rampant Aussies isn't going to help a bit.

She might be magnificent but as a female might I suggest she's not in it for his class, kindness or delightful personality?!!!!! The man is an unpleasant uncouth cretin. Can bat a bit though......

I only said she LOOKED magnificent. She may have a personality just like his but without his batting skills. Even so, if she knocked on my door, I'd be willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, without reference to DRS.

I see he's been picked to carry the drinks again in the T20 and ODIs against Sri Lanka. How is he supposed to develop any sort of batting form when England keep pulling him out of county cricket and then not playing him?

The return of Bresnan is no surprise but Carberry's recall (at the expense of Moeen Ali in the ODI side) is a real stunner.

Sadly my view is that Woakes will be the nearly man of England..... not quite international material. I hope I am wrong.... but one thing is for certain.... one way or the other - carrying the drinks tray wont help him.

My view of Woakes is that he's a much better red-ball cricketer than a white-ball one. His main weapon is swing and as we know the white balls do not swing that much, even in English conditions. He hasn't hit form with the bat yet this season (although he's doing no worse than many of his specialist colleagues) but I see him as a future Test No. 6 and fourth (not third) seamer.

In order to develop his game as a one-day player, Warwickshire should bat him higher up the order in the T20 and 50 over game, although they won't be able to do so if England keep calling him up to be a reserve.

Once upon a time there was a promising young player called Luke Wright. He got attached to the England set up; went on a tour or two; didn't play much cricket but carried a lot of drinks. Did OK in the hit and giggle but never reached the heights expected for him in red ball cricket.

Luke Wright's a likeable cricketer and probably very happy with the career he's made for himself in global T20 competitions. My point, though, is that at one time he looked destined for great things but his career stalled for the lack of time on the pitch. I'm guessing from the comments above that I wouldn't be the only one who was very annoyed if the same thing happened to Chris Woakes.

Well at the end of his career Woakes will have no problem getting a job as a waiter - left out again instead of playing CC for Warks.

Delighted to see Chris is in the squad for the first test, let's hope he's actually allowed to play and show what he's capable of.

I fear he may be 12th man. Moeen has to play. He will bat 6. They won't need 5 seamers so one has to miss out. Hope it isn't chris
