Just noticed that Scyld Berry has tweeted: "Chris Woakes is the Angela Merkel of England cricket, offering sense and stability when insanity threatens to overtake!"
And Huw Lloyd says: "Woakes is like the free biscuit you get with coffee, it does its job, no one really celebrates it but Christ you miss it when it's not there"

Like the Huw Lloyd quote - can't say I understand the Berry quote as she is probably the one most responsible for the instability of Europe.

It has been a fantastic last year for Chris Woakes, finally gaining the confidence to show how good he is at the highest level. When Wisden comes out next month I will be astonished if he is not one of their five cricketers of the year.

yes had a tough time in India on unhelpful surfaces but what a great year for him. Hopefully he is a nailed on certainty for this summers tests. It will be interesting to see which way they go. with the lack of middle order bastmen, I expect they will leave Moeen at 5 which will enable them to have Chris at 8 and Rashid at 9

Yes he should become a politician when he retires from cricket.

Personally I wouldn't take any notice of anything BERRY says - Apparently he thinks JOSS THE DROSS BUTTLER should Captain England's ODI team - this is a so called world class cricketer who in his last 10 ODI innings has scored a magnificent 80 runs - Average of 8, whereas Jonny Bairstow scored only 86 in his last innings - Too much hype in the modern game - If I was likened to Angela Merkel I would see it as an insult BUT then Berry is an insult - A blot on the landscape - What he knows about cricket tuppence wouldn't get his haircut would it?

Chris Woakes yesterday showed all the maturity of a fine all round cricketer - Yet again he has proven to be a match winner for England - Hopefully he will continue in that light - Well done Woaksie you were absolutely superb.

Scyld Berry may have some daft opinions (don't we all?) but his book Cricket: The Game of Life is an absolute delight.

He has played an awful lot of cricket lately so no surprise really.

Shame for him, but hopefully he will be back for the test series.

Yes he's had injury problems over the years and his body probably needed a rest rather than going to the ipl. But I dont blame him one little bit. You have to cash in while you can.

I was almost expecting it really and no doubt if India win we will have all the sub-continent telling us "Oh of course it is the final that was meant to be...". That is just typical of the way Pakistan get through to finals after Sri Lanka played butter-fingers on Monday and typical of England to waltz through to the semi's and then play badly once. Often in these type of tournaments, it is better to get your one **** performance out of the way quickly.

If George has got it right, this is good news for Warwickshire but not for Chris Woakes:
